I desire to hear God speak to me directly. How can I hear him speak?

Thank you for contacting us with your interesting question. I am glad that you want to hear God speak to you personally; this is a wonderful thing.

God speaks to us in a number of different ways. He speaks to everyone, for example, through His creation.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. (Psalm 19:1)

As Romans 1 tells us, we have no excuse if we reject God, because His character and reality are clear from the things He has made.

God does speak sometimes in an audible voice. He did so when the Lord Jesus was baptised.

Now when all the people were baptised, and when Jesus also had been baptised and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:21-22)

He also speaks through dreams and visions. For example, the apostle John was in exile on the Island of Patmos. As he worshipped God on the Lord's Day, he had a vision of the Lord Jesus and of Heaven. This is described in Revelation 1.

He also speaks through the words of other Christians, inspired by the Holy Spirit.

However, the main way in which He speaks is through the Bible. As Christians we need to humble ourselves to hear His voice in the way He has appointed, by reading His word regularly. If you are a Christian, He will speak to you personally through it, because the Holy Spirit who lives in you will bring His word to life for you, showing you God's will for you.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit...who apportions to each one individually as he wills. (1 Corinthians 12:4, 11)

The Bible encourages us to seek spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14:1), so you can ask God to speak to you in the way you desire. However, you need to ask yourself why you want this to happen. Do you need proof that God really exists? Do you desire exciting experiences, rather that desiring the presence of God? Is your desire to glorify God?

Sometimes, we do not realise how much we are motivated by pride and ambition, rather than becoming a humble servant of God and His people. The Bible tells us that the gifts of the Spirit are given to us so we can build up other people's faith.

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 12:7)

There is only one valid reason for desiring spiritual gifts and that is love.

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. (1 Corinthians 13:1-3)

The Bible promises that God will speak to us, but it does not promise that God will speak to us in a voice that can be heard by our physical ears. It talks, instead, about our spiritual hearing, as the Holy Spirit speaks within us.

And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it”, when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. (Isaiah 30:21)

As Christians are called to live by faith.

The righteous shall live by faith. (Romans 1:17)

I cannot promise you that God will speak to you aloud, but I can promise you that God will speak to you. Live by faith, humbly study His word and watch for His guidance. Desire to know Him and to do His will and He will guide you and speak to you. He knows your heart and your deepest desires. By His Spirit, He will work in your life to put to death those desires that are wrong and to empower you to desire and to do what is right. Perhaps, one day, He really will speak to you aloud, but if He doesn't, He will still fill your heart and satisfy you with His presence.

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures for evermore. (Psalm 16:11)
