Ask a questionQ & A
People don't see that change that has occurred in me. Do I have to prove it in some way?
Thank you so much for your honest and heartfelt spiritual enquiry.
On the one hand, you do not have to prove yourself to anyone. On the other hand, of course, you have to prove yourself to everyone, especially yourself!
I am so pleased that you recognise the profound change which is taking place in you; how wonderful is that? However, you are right to be concerned that others do not give witness to that change. So why could this be?
Changed people who have become Christians are a marvel to the people they know.
The apostle Paul openly said that, “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith which he once tried to destroy.” (Galatians 1:23) Indeed, Paul responded to the ‘godly gossip’ in joy saying and they glorified God in me (Galatians 1:24). Even Peter says that our former friends will think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you (1 Peter 4:3-4). And again Paul says regarding the new Christian: For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. (2 Corinthians 2:15-16)
The change in us as we become Christians should cause ‘godly gossip’; a marvel in others at the change within us.
Perhaps it is just a matter of time before your friends notice the change within you. Perhaps they are watching to see if the new fruit they see in you is real and not a temporary fad. If that is the case, be patient and continue to walk with Jesus.
Perhaps your spiritual growth is inhibited in some way? Perhaps there is not enough clear separation between your old life and your new one. If that is the case, then there are some things you need to turn away from and undoubtedly some former ties that need severing.
In summary, you must be certain that your conversion to faith is real and that over time this can and will be seen by others around you. Keep praying to God and reading his word as they will show you how to live. If necessary, repent of sin and walk away from them. Also, remember that when people do see a change in you, be prepared to say "it's all because of Jesus!"
