Questions & answers    THE HOLY SPIRIT    His Power

Is it possible to be a Christian and be afraid of the Holy Spirit?

Thank you so much for contacting us with your question. I can tell you straight away that it certainly is possible to be a Christian and still have fears. You are a Christian if you have repented of your sins, have invited Jesus Christ to be your Saviour and Lord and are trusting Him as your only hope of Heaven. The Bible says:

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:11-13)

So if you have received Jesus, then you are God's beloved child, eternally secure in Him.If you want to know more about what Jesus has done for you please watch the video on the main part of our site:

You do not explain why you are afraid of the Holy Spirit, but there are several reasons why people sometimes have fears regarding Him. Older translations of the Bible use the term 'Holy Ghost' and this, in some people, conjures up mental pictures of ghosts and ghouls that make them feel afraid of the supernatural and unexplainable. However, 'ghost' is just an old-fashioned word for 'spirit' and refers to the fact that the Holy Spirit is an invisible Person from Heaven who influences us by His loving power. You can trust Him just as you trust Jesus to do you good and not harm.

Another reason for fear is that some people who experience the Holy Spirit seem to respond by shaking or falling over or shouting. Some of them are just putting it on and being over-emotional. However, when the Holy Spirit fills you, you may feel overwhelmed by joy and may need a way of expressing it. The Holy Spirit is powerful and may be healing people of hurts in a very deep way, and this can make them cry. However, He always acts in love and in ways that are Biblical. Do not allow yourself to focus too much on what people do when they feel the Holy Spirit working in them. He will never overrule your will or violate you in any way. He behaves quite differently from the evil spirits invoked by magic and spiritualism. He is always loving and always righteous in what He does.

The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit has been given to us as a guarantee that we will receive all the blessing of Heaven when we die. Every real Christian already has the Holy Spirit.

He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. (2 Corinthians 5:5)

The Holy Spirit brings to our lives the blessings that Christ bought for us on the Cross.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. (Romans 8:1-2)

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Life who sets us free. He does not hurt or condemn us because there is no condemnation for us. Our sins are forgiven and we have been made righteous (holy and pleasing to God). Jesus took our sin and gave us His righteousness.

For our sake he made [Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

God loves you and if you have received Christ as your Saviour and Lord, He is pleased with you and accepts you as His righteous child. His power in action, the Holy Spirit, also loves you and will never hurt you. He gives you peace and joy.

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17)

So do not fear Him; He is God. Instead, ask Him to fill you more and more and help you to live for God. He will show you truth in the Bible and minister its truth to you, in order to set you free. He will guide your prayers.

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. (Romans 8:14-17)

Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (Romans 8:26)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. (John 16:13)

And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. (1 John 5:6)
