Ask a questionQ & A
If the Holy Spirit is God, why do Christians still preach about the second coming of Jesus?
Thank you for your interesting question. You are correct to note that the Holy Spirit is a member of the Trinity: one God in three persons. You are also correct to note that Christians throughout the world talk about Jesus' second coming.
Christians talk about the second coming of Jesus because it will happen at some point in the future. We do not know when, but we are told that it will happen: the Apostles, after they saw Jesus ascend into heaven, while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven." (Acts 1:10-11). Jesus makes it clear that we do not know when it will happen, in fact not even he knows, but we must be ready (Matthew 24:36).
The reason why we must be ready is because when Jesus returns, there will be no further opportunities for people to accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour. If people do not accept Jesus before he returns, which could happen at any moment, then the Bible tells us that they will be lost.
Until that time, the Holy Spirit is with us in order to lead people to repentance so that as many people as possible accept Jesus as their Saviour. Jesus said that "when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come" (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit is guiding people, perhaps including you, into the truth of the Good News of Jesus.
Would you like to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? Jesus loves you so much that he died on the cross, paying the price for your sin. He then rose from the dead, showing his power over death. By asking him for forgiveness and placing your trust in him, you can know God personally and have assurance that whatever happens in the future, whether you die or Jesus returns, you are saved. When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, the Holy Spirit is given to us, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory (Ephesians 1:14). This means that the Holy Spirit is with us to show us that we are saved.
In summary, it is true that the Holy Spirit is God and that Christians preach on the second coming of Jesus. This happens because just as Jesus went to heaven, he will also return. As we do not know when this will be, we must be prepared, as it could happen at any moment. The Holy Spirit today leads us to repentance and accepting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. The Holy Spirit then remains with us to give us assurance of the salvation we have in Jesus. If you have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, I encourage you to do so today.
