Question

Was Jesus born on 25th December?

Answer

Thank you for this question about the date of birth of Jesus.

Regarding the birth of Jesus the Bible does not give an exact date or time. People did not keep a record of these things in the time of Jesus.

The Bible does say that Jesus was born at the time Herod was King:

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. (Matthew 2:1)

Therefore we know that the date would have been around (37–4 bc) when Herod reigned.

There are many different ideas about why Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25th, but it is impossible to prove the exact date that Jesus was born. He could have been born on December 25th but we will not be able to find out.

We are sorry that this answer cannot be more specific. The main thing to remember is that Christian Christmas celebrations are to remember what Jesus did for us. He left the glories of heaven to come to earth for us. He was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life and died in the place of sinners like us.

"Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us). (Matthew 1:23)

"She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21)

The important thing is not when Jesus was born, but that he was born! He came to make a way for us to be right before God! If you have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, asking for the forgiveness of your sins and wanting to live for him, then I encourage you to do so today!
