Ask a questionQ & A
I have asked Jesus into my heart but I keep slipping back into my old ways and sins. What can I do?
Thank you so much for your honest spiritual enquiry.
The bible gives us encouragement about our faith when Paul tells us: I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. (Philippians 3:14-15)
On a more important matter, may I say to you that ‘asking Jesus into your heart’ is often times a most misleading and powerless practice. It would appear that in times past you have experienced this absence of power having done just that and that a revisit to the same practice of ‘asking Jesus into your heart’ might only produce exactly the same powerless result.
It is not asking Jesus into our heart that we need, we need to be born again.
You must agree with God regarding your condition in confessing your sins to Him. You must see and believe that Jesus Christ the Lord, the Son of God, died in your place on Calvary’s cross, taking upon Himself the judgement of your sins that you rightly deserved to have had placed upon you. You must then receive His most gracious forgiveness for you.
Once you do this, The Holy Spirit then inhabits you, giving you a new person and a new heart and making you part of the church. No matter what happens after this, He will never leave you nor forsake you but shall be with you and in you help you to become victorious over your sinful nature.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8)
In summary, from this side of heaven until the resurrection of our bodies, we are two natured individuals, two hearted people, our old person that is always resisting the God driven desires of the new person placed in us by the Holy Spirit.
These two hearts will always be a discomfort to you unless you know exactly what is going on inside of you and are aware of the great fact that you are no longer under any obligation to obey your ‘old sinful nature’ but now have the power to put into practice all the desires of your new nature in Jesus.
This is a very important subject for you to understand and I recommend that you spend time daily and prayerfully the bible, with Romans 1-8 in particular. God, by His Holy Spirit will show you all you need to know.
Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:
- Romans 1:1-8:39
- Acts 16:30,31
- Acts 26:6-18
