Question

Why did Jesus die for me?

Answer

Thank you for this great question about why Jesus died.

Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance" (Mark 2:17)

Jesus came to call us to repent. This means to turn from our sin and turn towards God; to do a 180 degree turn away from the things that anger God and look toward Him.

Jesus showed us how to do this by his perfect live.

But more than that Jesus went on to die for us, to take the punishment that we deserve from God. If we believe in Jesus' death it means that he took the punishment for the wrong that we have done. On the cross Jesus, the perfect one, took the punishment for the wrong I have done.

This is why he died. To make a way for me to be forgiven.

Jesus died and buried my sin far away.

He rose again to show that he had conquered death and give new life to all who believe in him.

Consider these Bible verses:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God (John 3:16-18)

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation (Romans 5:8-11)

For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve (1 Corinthians 15:3-5)
