Questions & answers    JESUS    As Saviour of The World

Question

How can I learn to trust Jesus when I can't see or feel him? I find humans difficult enough to trust, and I have real experiences with them.

Answer

Thank you for your question about seeing Jesus.

Please consider these two passages from the Bible:

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. (John 6:35-40)

This one above says that some people did see Jesus and yet did not believe.

Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed (John 20:26-29)

This passage above says that Thomas did see Jesus and believed, but blessed are others who do not see Jesus and yet believe.

It is all about faith. Faith is believing in something that we cannot see or feel. Yet faith is not simply willing ourselves to believe something of which we are not actually convinced. The writer of the Book of Hebrews says,

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible (Hebrews 11:1).

Faith, then, is a spiritual experience in itself. It is the gift of God to us that enables us to be sure of unseen things, and to have understanding of God's activity in creation and salvation. It is the entrance of the soul into the unseen, spiritual reality of this life. When you can't see that Jesus is at work, or feel his presence in some very personal way, you can still say that you have been given this greatest of spiritual gifts to trust in God and in his reality in all of life and in your life as well. God sent his son, Jesus, into the world to reveal Him finally and completely, to show His love for us all, to pay the price of sin on the cross on our behalf, and to rise from death as the ever-living Saviour and Lord.

The main question, therefore, is do you trust that Jesus is who he said he was, that he died to forgive us and rose again to give us new life?

Can I encourage you to read the books of Mark and John and see if you believe Jesus is who he said he is. I believe that Jesus is alive and ruling over all things from heaven. I believe by faith that he died for me to forgive me. I believe that he will come back again one day and I will go to heaven because he rose again to give me new life. You can believe this, too, and place your trust in Jesus Christ!

For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13-14
