Question

We say that Jesus has suffered everything that we have suffered but he didn't suffer old age.

Answer

Thank you for this question about Jesus suffering. It is important to note that nowhere in the Bible does it directly say that Jesus ‘suffered everything that we have suffered’. This would be impossible. For a start Jesus was a man, and therefore could not experience certain things that a woman may suffer. Also Jesus was never married, or in a sexual relationship, and therefore experience divorce or sex etc.

The Bible does however say that Jesus was tempted with sin in every way that we have been:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1)

And:

For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)

And:

For we do not have a high priest (Jesus) who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:15-16)

Temptation to sin can affect anyone of any age. Jesus is therefore able to help anyone when they are faced with the temptation to sin.

Jesus can also relate to people who suffer through old age. Old age problems may include: frailty, loneliness and the reality of facing death. Jesus faced all of these things and can help people through them.

Jesus sends the comforter, the Holy Spirit to all who believe in him for help.

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" (John 14:26-27).

The fact that Jesus did not directly experience old age does not mean that he cannot help older people through life. In some ways you could argue that Jesus is in fact the oldest person as he has no beginning or end! Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) He died, rose again to new life and ascended into heaven where he is still alive!

In summary, Jesus was tempted to sin, just as we are. However, whereas we fail in keeping God's commands, Jesus fulfilled the law entirely and did not sin. He died on the cross and rose from the dead so that our sin can be forgiven and our relationship with God can be restored. I encourage you to place your trust in him today.
