Is Jesus the Son of God or just a son of God?

Thank you so much for your spiritual enquiry about Jesus.

Jesus is referred to by the title 'Son of God' many times in the New Testament, and though this distinction is somewhat lost on us today, it was clearly understood by the Jews whom Jesus, as well as His apostles, spoke to; this term refers to deity and being God!

When we read John 10:30-39 we see that in this passage there were some who wanted to stone Jesus because He referred to Himself as 'the Son of God' claiming also that, "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30). Indeed, we read that the Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God." (John 10:33)

The Romans would have thought such claims were a move toward sedition in overthrowing their rule. However blasphemy, or claiming to be God, according to Jewish law was punishable by death.

Also, when at His trial, Jesus stood before Pilate once again accused of blasphemy. Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him." The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God." (John 19:6-8)

Now, take a look at another passage, John 9:35-38, where Jesus in conversation with a man whose sight He has just restored asked: "Do you believe in the Son of God?" He answered and said, "Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?" And Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you." Then he said, "Lord, I believe!" And he worshipped Him

The healed man clearly understood the term 'Son of God' and as such, offered Jesus worship as God, which He did not refuse. Indeed, even 'doubting' Thomas, one of Jesus' disciples, on encountering the risen Lord Jesus Christ said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28).

Most importantly, God the Father Himself refers to Jesus' deity in Hebrews 1:8 where we read, But to the Son He says: "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of Your kingdom".

It is so very important that people understand who Jesus is; that He is not just a son of God in the same way that those who belong to God as part of His family are His sons and daughters, but that He is 'God the Son'; the second distinct person of the Godhead and Trinity, equal to God the Father and God the Holy Spirit, and as such, endowed with all power and authority, who was also able to conquer death and sin!

This is important because only by understanding who Jesus as God the Son truly is can we understand the magnitude of what He did: clothing Himself in human flesh, going to the Cross and taking the full weight of God's wrath as the punishment for our sin. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25).

In summary, we need to know that Jesus did all of this, so that we who belong to Jesus do not come to Him merely as one who will listen to our cares and struggles and who will simply help us in our daily lives, but we come to Him as God Almighty, the Maker and Creator of the whole universe, whom we can absolutely trust with our eternal destiny.
