Ask a questionQ & A
If God exists, why do heinous crimes happen on earth?
Thank you for this question that often stops people trusting in God. The fact that you care about crime happening on earth is actually a good sign that you have a conscience and are made in the image of God.
God does exist and He created us to know and love Him and to live under His loving guidance. However the main reason that there is crime on earth is that people ignore God and turn away from Him to do evil things. Consider this passage from the Bible:
Since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. (Romans 1:28-31)
It says that people don’t acknowledge God so they are then free to do whatever evil they want. Instead of following God's guidance to live at peace in the world they do evil things.
This evil causes a barrier between us and God. Our sin and evil blocks us from knowing God because He is perfect and Holy.
The Good News is that God sent His own Son Jesus to live a perfect live on earth and die in our place for our sin. This means that God can forgive us through Christ and give us a new life with the Holy Spirit to live as God intended.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. (John 3:16-17)
I am confident that God does actually prevent a lot of evil from taking place; God has not just left us to our own ways. His common grace is active in the world around us. He provides food for the poor and refuge for the destitute.
If all men lived under God's way then there would be far less crime, there may even be none! This is what heaven will be like. People who go to heaven through faith in Jesus will not be subject to crimes anymore because God will be there and all will follow him perfectly.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away." And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death." (Revelation 21:1-8)
In summary we believe God does exist, and does prevent some evil in the world. But until we are in heaven living perfectly under God's rule then there will be evil and crime in the world because people turn away from God; it is not God's fault but mankind's.
