Ask a questionQ & A
I am ill and my mother has died. Why did this happen?
Thank you for sharing this personal situation about illness and death that has obviously caused you much pain. The world we live in was never intended to contain death or any illness. When God made the world he said that it was good:
And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. (Genesis 1:31)
Sadly man turned away from God and therefore death and sickness entered the world. God is perfect and therefore anything wrong leads to consequences.
Since then everyone that has ever lived has also died. It is not God's fault that people die or are sick. It is a result of the wrong in the world that we live in.
At the same time, we shouldn't think that God is punishing us directly for something we have done wrong. God simply does not tell us why bad things happen to us. We can certainly say that they happen because we live in a fallen world and are therefore the consequence of sin being in the world, but we cannot go further and say that they are a consequence of some particular sin in our own lives. Bad things happen to godly as well as ungodly people.
The Good News is that God wants us to know his love and comfort through the difficult times like losing a loved one or being sick. God sent his own Son to live among the created world and eventually die on the cross to forgive people for the wrong they have done.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him."
God sent his Son to forgive us for the wrong we have done. He also promises a perfect eternity in heaven with him for those who trust in the work of Jesus and live for God.
In summary, do not blame God for the things that have happened, but turn to him for comfort, guidance and a life of peace and eternity in heaven.
