Ask a questionQ & A
I want God to speak to me. Tell me clearly, what does He want of me?
Thank you so much for your very honest question. It is great to hear from someone who simply desires to know God and to hear Him speak to them. We will answer the question looking at what the bible says and try to explain things as simply as possible.
All human beings need plain answers from God. We are often weak and foolish and find it difficult to make sense of life or to decide what is right. We desperately need God to guide us and God promises to do so, if we will listen, leading us through this world and taking us to Heaven when we die.
You will guide me with Your counsel, And afterward receive me to glory. (Psalm 73:24)
In fact, God has already spoken. Everything we need is already written down in His Word, the Bible. That is where the answers to life's problems are found.
"It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’" (Matthew 4:4)
Jesus spoke these words when he was starving and alone and being attacked by the devil. If He needed to rely on God's Word, so do we!
The problem is that the Bible is a long book and it takes time to begin to understand it. However, God has given us guides to teach us His Word. We can learn what He says by going to church and being taught by the leaders there. Often, too, other Christians can help you understand His Word. Also, He has given true Christians the Holy Spirit to live inside them and show them what God says.
"When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth." (John 16:13)
You ask us to tell you plainly and clearly what God wants of you. So here it is.
First and foremost, God wants you to be forgiven and become a true Christian. Like everyone else, you have done wrong and broken His laws. He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to take the punishment for your sins by dying on the cross. He wants to forgive you and enter your life as your Saviour and Lord. He says to you,
"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." (Revelation 3:20)
He wants you to open the door of your heart and life and let Him come in and stay with you forever.
When you have done that, He wants you to live a life of faith, trusting Him, reading His Word and praying about everything. He wants you to become a strong Christian who can carry on when times are hard, as well as when things are going well.
When you have difficult decisions to make, He will find a way to show you what He wants you to do, if you are doing the things we have mentioned. His Spirit may make a Bible verse stand out to you as you read. It may be that a friend will say just what you need to hear. You may even have a dream or read a book which shows you God's will. Simply, trust Him in your life and He will show you great things.
In summary, God wants you to truly belong to Him. He wants to speak to you daily. He wants you to learn to recognise his voice and to obey Him. This happens as you grow as a Christian. He has many ways of speaking, though the most important by far is through the Bible.
He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3)
