Ask a questionQ & A
How do l surrender my will to God?
Thank you for your question about surrendering to God. It is our hope that this answer will help and encourage you.
It’s such a pleasure to answer a question that will help people to live walking in step with Jesus. As you asked this, you have probably noticed that trying your best is not as easy as it sounds; even Paul wrote: for I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. (Romans 7:19).
The short answer is that we surrender our will to God through prayer (Psalm 143:8, Colossians 4:12) and worshiping Him. The more our hearts engage with the truth about God, the closer we become with God, the more we obey (Mark 3:35), enjoy (Psalm 119:9-16), and know God’s will (Romans 12:1-2).
You can see this a lot in the bible. Psalm 40 is a good example; David was in trouble (Psalm 40:2, 12, 14, 17). Worship (Psalm 40:2-6) did not end his trouble straight away, but it got him to the place where God’s will was his delight (Psalm 40:7-8). The “assembly” (Psalm 40:9-10) is the same word in Greek as “church”. So worshipping as part of a church community is a big part of this. If you are not part of a church, I encourage you to click the link at the bottom of this page. The local church is able to help you in all matters and to help you in submitting to God.
In summary, you can surrender to God’s will through prayer and worship, which remind us how good he is. God surrendered to humanity’s evil will at the cross to save us (Luke 23:25), even though it meant he would suffer. Worshiping him for doing that changes our attitude to his will, even when it’s hard:
Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. (1 Peter 4:1-2)
