Question

When someone thinks of learning the words of God, is this a calling or is it just a good thing to do?

Answer

Thank you for your question about learning and calling.

This is a very complex question to answer as there are so many things that I do not know about you personally and as such it is hard to give a simple yes or no answer. It is good to learn, but it could also be a calling.

I would like to encourage you to speak to your Church leaders about this matter. If you are not part of a local Church then that is the first place to start. You might find that the LookingforGod Church Finder can help you find a local church to attend: www.lookingforGod.com/churchfinder

Firstly it is always good for a believer to learn more about God. In fact this should be something that all of God's people do. I believe that we will spend the rest of eternity learning more about our infinite God but how are you currently growing in your knowledge of God?

It is very possible for us to sense a strong call from God to learn more deeply the truth of Him but we may confuse that with a call to teach others, especially when we first begin to realise how wonderful is the knowledge of God and His Word. The question is how to distinguish the call to learn about God from a call to become a teacher or preacher.

The starting point is to work out what your gifts are from the Holy Spirit. Have you a gift for teaching or preaching? For example, have you found in yourself an ability to explain to others the truths of the Bible? Do people look to you to answer their questions about God? Do you have the heart of a pastor in a deep care for people, including their natural as well as spiritual needs?

It is a good thing to want to be involved in the Church. Consider this verse: The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task (1 Timothy 3:1). However it is also a solemn role and not to be entered into lightly. The New Testament talks more about the qualifications of a Church leader than it does about many other serious topics.

Calling is such a complex topic. There are many good books written on this subject and I would encourage you to try and read some before progressing. Speak to your Church about it. Pray about it on your own and also with family and the Church leadership. It is not something to be taken lightly.
