Question

I keep making the same mistakes over and over again. How many times can God forgive me? I'm feeling very despondent and can't live my life without God's help.

Answer

Thank you for sharing your situation and asking such an honest question. It is encouraging to hear that you want God's help and also that you want to make things right with God. I hope that this answer will encourage you and also give you some practical steps to stop the issue.

Firstly consider this Bible passage:
Then Peter came up and said to him, "Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy- seven times" (Matthew 18:21-22)

This is how God forgives us through Jesus Christ. In one sense, when we acknowledge our sin before Christ, we are completely forgiven forever. The term seven times seventy or seventy seven times is meant to be a figure that is uncountable; where no record could be kept. This tells us that God will forgive us infinite times if we confess it to him.

However we should not go on sinning. We are to put sin to death as often as is needed. We are to turn back to God whenever we sin. Consider these verses:

I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments (1 John 2:2-4).

The answer is the same today as it was when you first believed. You need to turn to God through Jesus' death and resurrection. God does not get tired of forgiving us as we may get tired of forgiving someone.

However we also need to take practical steps to stop sin in our lives. Whatever the issue is that you keep repeating you need to put things in place to stop it.

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptised into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life (Romans 6:1-5)

Speak to a local Church leader and ask them to pray for you. Ask them to be available for you to call them when you feel tempted to sin. If not a church leader, then find another Christian that you are able to trust in this way.

Without knowing what the sin is specifically it is hard to give specific advice. But put it to death!

In summary, God will forgive us if we ask him for forgiveness. Therefore, go to him and ask him! Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and he rose from the dead to show his power over death. By placing our trust in him, we can know God personally in our lives.
