Where is God when life hurts?

Thank you for this honest question about where God is when life hurts. It is almost inevitable that in this fallen world, every human will feel pain or hurt at some point. The death of a loved one, illness, loneliness, war and suffering can all cause life to hurt.

The truth is that most of the pain and suffering in this world is caused by our fellow human beings. Men start wars, do not share food so others suffer, people are cruel and cause all kinds of pain to other people. This is because man has turned away from God and broken God's laws and rules.

God's main rules are for us to love him and to love one another:

"Which is the great commandment in the Law?" And Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself". (Matthew 22:36-39)

God has commanded us to love each other and support each other, but when we don’t, life hurts. The truth is that God never changes. He is always fully loving and just. He is always there for people to turn to when life is hard. Consider the words of this psalmist:

The friendship of the LORD is for those who trust him, and he makes known to them his covenant. My eyes are ever toward the LORD, for he will pluck my feet out of the net. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent hatred they hate me. Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. (Psalm 25:14-20)

He did not turn away from God and blame God for his pain. He acknowledged that he had sinned and caused others pain and asked God to draw near to him in his time of need. He took refuge in God instead of blaming God. These are some of the names of God:

His name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)

This is not a distant God, or a God who causes hurt. He is a personal God who longs to be near to his people. God loves us so much that he sent his only Son for us to die in our place so that our sin can be forgiven.

The Bible says: "that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgement: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God."
(John 3:15-21)

God was hurt so that we do not have to hurt alone any more.

In summary, all of us hurt in our lives. Since the fall, every human has gone through times of difficulty. However, God is not absent from our suffering, and he knows what it is like to suffer as Jesus went to the cross and suffered for us. I encourage you to accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, who will help you through your difficulties and always be a helping hand to you.
