Ask a questionQ & A
What is the best way for me to help someone who is struggling this Christmas?
Thank you for wanting to help people this Christmas and for asking what is the best way to help. Without knowing how the person is struggling it is hard to specifically answer your question. Therefore I will try and answer how you can help someone physically, spiritually and emotionally.
If you know that someone is in physical need of shelter, food, water or medical attention then we would encourage you to provide support if you are willing and able. You could also signpost them to a charity or organisation that exists to support people who are struggling. If you are to help them yourself it is appropriate to obtain information from professionals who can help. In the Bible we are encouraged to "love your neighbour as yourself" (Mark 12:31) and this often involves providing for people's physical needs. However we should exercise wisdom in how to do this for our own safety.
"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me" (Matthew 25:35-36)
People can often become lonely around Christmas time as it is usually a time to celebrate with family and friends. Many people can suffer from issues of the past and the loss of loved ones. If it is appropriate to provide some company with them on Christmas Day, you may well help such people emotionally. Encourage them to talk about their problems if they would like to, and to remember the good times. The Bible encourages us to share with one another our burdens.
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)
Finally we come to the problem that all people have if they do not know the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. Christmas time is meant to be when we remember that Jesus came to earth on a rescue mission to make a way for us to be right with God again. God became man and through Jesus' death and resurrection, we can know forgiveness for our sins and a new life with God.
Jesus said "Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28)
We encourage you to look to Jesus for help as you help others but also to tell them about the one who loves them more than anyone else.
In summary, there are many ways that you can help people physically, emotionally and spiritually throughout this Christmas period I encourage you to speak to other local charities and your church leadership for advice. There may be projects they have that you can get involved with.
