How can God make something out of nothing?

Thank you so much for your thoughtful question about creation.

The fact that God created the universe out of nothing is a vital truth for Christians. If he did not, then matter would have an independent (perhaps eternal?) existence, and God would have no right to rule it or use it for his own purposes. However, the fact that a loving and all-wise God created the universe out of nothing is the bedrock that assures us that everything has meaning and purpose. The reason why so many cannot get their minds around this truth is that they have been conditioned to think only in terms of a closed universe in which God, if he exists at all, must himself be a part. This is quite contrary to the Bible's teaching, which reveals a God who dwells outside his creation - in eternity.

The Bible speaks of God as being all powerful. Indeed, this omnipotent (all powerful) aspect of God marks not only the opening pages of the book of Genesis, but also is the mark of God’s initial unveiling of Himself to people of faith. When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless" (Genesis 17:1)

God’s Almighty power in creation is seen primarily in three physical areas: first that He can begin to make. Second, that He can sustain that which He has made and third, that He can complete that which He begins to make and continues to sustain.

In other words, God, in His almighty power, is never exhausted, diverted, diminished or bored!

God ‘resting’ on the seventh day of creation was for Him both to take pleasure and delight in that which He created, and in resting, gives to us His creatures of very finite capacity, both an example of His command to rest and the opportunity to mutually contemplate and enjoy His wondrous works.

If we look at a cook baking a cake, they may make a mess in the kitchen, but they are making something out of something. Almighty God, however, out of nothing made something so large that it appears to be way beyond our comprehension, and despite its increasing vastness and seeming immeasurability on our part, as the Almighty God, He continues to sustain this universe of His making, upholding all things by the Word of His power.

The universe we presently see reveals to us God’s eternal power; it shows us His Almightiness. I suspect that our investigative minds will continue to uncover much more of the inexhaustible wonders of His creation and in the so doing will continue to be amazed at both its complexity and connectivity.

Our minds will always come to a barrier of understanding as we try to contemplate such a vast intelligent design, and I believe this is part of God’s plan. Indeed, in creation, this scientific barrier and seemingly uncrossable chasm of understanding which I am about to describe is not a design flaw in creation, but rather, a design necessity.

Though creation is constructed to reveal to us His pleasure, God’s Almighty power, His signature on creation, can only be truly seen through the eyes of faith!

There is enough in creation to show you God’s omnipotence, but only faith will help us to see who God is, acknowledge the handiwork of God in creation and accept that He made all things out of nothing. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible (Hebrews 11:3)

God has designed His outward creation to include the necessity of faith for us to further understand the wonders of who He is. Once again, this is not a design flaw, but rather, it is a design necessity. You must have faith and faith must use the logic of the mind as a way into the arms of Almighty God.

For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. (Romans 1:19-23)
