Why haven't we seen more miracles like the ones in the Bible?

Thank you for your spiritual enquiry. This is a great question to ask.

In the Old Testament miracles were, compared to the New Testament, both unique and rare. An example of an Old Testament miracle can be seen in 2 Kings 6:6 where an axe head floats, or in the 10 plagues of Egypt that Moses, under the direction of God, called upon Egypt in Exodus 7:1-12:51.

When Jesus ministered on earth He showed a new way to heal the sick and feed the poor amongst other unique miracles. The aim of these might well have been to ultimately show people what heaven would be like with no more suffering or pain and to show them that He was the one who had come to make a way to heaven.

All miracles are designed to point people to the one who enables the miracles to happen. In Matthew 12:38-39 Jesus is asked to show a miracle and he replies "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah”. Jesus was saying here that he would enter the earth for three days after dying and then rise again and this points to the greatest miracle of all, that is: Jesus being raised from death after dying for the sins of the world.

It is true that today we do not see as many miracles as what happened in Jesus' time, but that does not mean miracles are not taking place. Quite recently I heard a story of a woman who was medically blind having her sight restored after receiving prayer.

One of the reasons that we do not see miracles as often is that we do not pray for miracles; they will not happen if we do not pray for them. We do not often have a need for miracles. We have enough food to eat and doctors to visit when we are sick. Perhaps if we relied more upon God we would see more miracles happen.

If there is a particular miracle that you would like to see in your life, why not spend some time in prayer to the Father, asking him to work in wonderful ways?

We do however often see the greatest miracle of other people putting their faith in Jesus' death and resurrection and therefore also seeing the sign of Jonah in their old life passing away and their new life in Christ starting.

I never have any difficulty believing in miracles, since I experienced the miracle of a change in my own heart. - St Augustine
