Questions & answers    GOD    His Being, Person & Attributes

When you pray, how do you know it is the Christian God and not any other god you are speaking to?

Thank you so much for your honest spiritual enquiry. What a great question!

As there is only one God, frankly, you can't go wrong.

If your prayers, in sincerity and honesty are directed to God, the unseen creator of all things and of you, then this is the right thing to do. However, once your prayers are directed to an image of the invisible God, whether that image is in stone, or in wood, is written on paper, or is encased in a some created name then you are praying to something that is not God.

The Bible declares itself to be the very word of God and declares that God revealed Himself to us just over 2,000 years ago, in all the fullness of revelation that we might ever need in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ the Lord. In addition to this, God also decreed that we might approach Him through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus, who died to pay for our sins, and in approaching Him in this way, that we might then also ask anything of Him in His Son’s great name.

For in Him [Jesus] dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily (Colossians 2:9).

"And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full" (John 16:23-24)

I encourage you to pray in the same way that Jesus taught his disciples, the Lord's Prayer, which outlines the way we should think about praying to God. You might want to say it aloud and in a place free from distraction. Say these words with sincerity and give some time for God to answer you.

"In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen". (Matthew 6:9-13)

Here are some more Bible Verses for your further consideration:

  • Ephesians 1:15-23
  • Ephesians 3:14
  • 1 Peter 1:17
