Questions & answers    JESUS    As Lord, Master & Messiah

I know the Christian way but keep falling into sin. How can I commit to Jesus?

Thank you so much for your honest question. It is great that you have a knowledge of God. I encourage you to pray to God for help. We cannot change ourselves and make ourselves ‘good’ people. This is a work that God does in us.

I am sure that you feel discouraged and guilty about what you are doing; you know it is wrong and displeasing to God. The wonderful Good News of the Bible is that Jesus died to take the punishment that our sins deserve. If we truly repent and turn to God, trusting Jesus as our Lord and Saviour we no longer have to take that penalty, because Jesus already has!

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

In God’s sight we are clean through Christ:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

Is this true of you? Please really think and examine yourself, it is something that is too important just to assume.

Christians have the wonderful hope that one day we will be free from struggling with sin and we will live fully in a way that pleases God and be with him forever.

We do struggle with sin, yet we have the Holy Spirit living inside us to give us power to change. It may not be easy, but God will give us strength to resist sin in all its forms.

Sometimes drastic action needs to be taken. In Matthew 18:8-9, Jesus spoke about cutting off a hand or a foot or plucking out an eye if it causes us to sin. There might be some completely ‘legitimate’ things, but if they are causing you a problem and lead to these sins that you are struggling with perhaps they need to be cut off from your life. Of course, we do not advocate the removal of body parts, but if there is something you can cut out, such as a TV programme or certain internet sites, then cut these out of your life!

I don’t know the details of your situation and it isn’t always wise to make everyone aware of them, but believers are part of a family of God’s people. We should work as a family and support and help each other, we are not meant to try and struggle alone.

And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

It’s good that you’ve asked this question here, but even better would be to speak about this to a leader or an older wiser Christian that you can trust at a local bible-believing church. They may be able to give you good advice regarding the details of your situation, and being accountable to someone else is so important, particularly if you are struggling with sin in a particular area.

In summary, are you trying to stop sinning to make yourself good enough for God? You will always fail: we need to come confessing our sin and trusting in what Christ has done for us on the Cross and through the empty tomb. One day Christians will be completely free from sin, but that day has not come yet. We all still struggle in different areas. We need to take sin seriously, so please consider the need for taking some drastic action, and share with other Christians ask advice and be accountable. May God bless you as you seek to live to please him.
