How I can get close to God and not lose it?

Thank you for sharing your question about staying close to God. Life has many good and bad experiences which can cause us to feel closer or further away from God.

From time to time, every Christian will feel that they are closer or further from God. In the Bible you can read about accounts of people like King David, who was very intimate with God, but also went through some terrible experiences which led him to adultery and committing murder. These can be read in 2 Samuel 11 and 12.

Even Jesus' own disciples like Peter went through different experiences in the few years they followed him. Peter saw Jesus do great things but still denied him. Peter even said that he never knew him when Jesus needed him the most. This can be read about in Mark 14:66-72.

The key to a steady relationship with God is to keep on turning back to him. One famous Christian leader said:

The whole of the Christian life is one of repentance.

This means whenever we find ourselves moving away from God or doing things we know God doesn’t want us to do we need to turn back to him. Repentance is turning from the things that distract us from God and turning back 180 degrees to face God and follow Jesus.

The Bible tells us to “Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out” (Act 3:19).

Therefore firstly I want to encourage you to repent of all the wrong you have ever done and ask Jesus to forgive you. The Bible tells us that whoever believes Jesus died for their sins will be forgiven. We need to remind ourselves daily of what God has done for us through Jesus on the cross and how he has sent the Holy Spirit to give us new life. Have you ever fully acknowledged this before God?

Secondly I want to encourage you to pray and have a deeper walk with God, which can be done by reading God's word (the Bible) regularly.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:7-8)

This is important to do on our own but the Bible encourages us to do it alongside other followers of Jesus Christ. The Church is full of people who want to follow Jesus just like you. We all struggle from time to time and need each other for mutual support. The Bible says:

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

It is important to remember that these earthly experiences are not all that God has in store for us. He has promised us a perfect home in heaven for all eternity where we can enjoy life in the full forever. For those of us who have been forgiven we are given the promise of new life through the Holy Spirit. You can read about this in Romans 8.

In summary we want to encourage you to repent (turn back to) God, spend time with God as often as you can in prayer and reading the Scriptures, get involved in your local Church, draw near to God, remember your place in heaven and pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit. Remind yourself often of God's great love for you.

I encourage you to attend a local Bible believing church and speak to the leader about your question. If you want to find a local church, our Church Finder may help you: Find a Church
