Question

The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin, but we are still sinners. How can we enter heaven without a purification between death and glory?

Answer

Thank you for asking your question about sanctification.

You are correct to mention that the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7). It is through his shedding of his blood on the cross that we can have our relationship restored with God.

While we are on the earth, we are surrounded by temptation and sin. In Romans 8, Paul writes about our flesh, the old part of us trying to lead us away from God and into sin. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit (Romans 8:5). Even though we try to set our mind on Christ and the things of the Spirit, all of us will sin while we are here on earth. Paul acknowledges that everyone, himself included, fails to live a holy life and falls into sin (Romans 7:15-20).

However, upon our death, we are free from the failure of the flesh and free from temptation because there is no sin in heaven. Rather than having to go through a time of purification to be permitted entry to heaven, the truth is even more wonderful: we enter heaven because when God looks at us, he sees the work of his Son, Jesus.

We see this explained in Romans 8:30: And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. All of these conditions are in the past tense, as things that have already happened. However, Paul is writing to people who haven't died or perhaps hadn't even accepted Jesus yet. In faith Paul is recognising that the work of Jesus is for all time, not limited to a select group of people.

Our glorification has already been bought by Christ on the cross.

In summary, while we are on the earth we are surrounded by temptation and our flesh, our old way, tries and often succeeds in leading us to sin. However, our sins have already been forgiven by the blood of Jesus shed for us on the cross. When we die, believers can enter heaven because God looks at us and sees Christ, not our old way.
