Ask a questionQ & A
When will I see God?
Thank you for this great question about when we will see God.
In the whole of the Bible there are only a few accounts of people actually seeing God the Father. This is because God is so perfectly holy that no one can look at him and live. He says himself: "you cannot see My face. For there no man can see Me and live" (Exodus 33:20).
We are told in the Bible that to see God would mean we will die because he is perfect and we are not.
Jesus said "Blessed are the pure in heart! For they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). Here Jesus is saying that only pure people can see God. Jesus came to earth to live a perfect and pure life so that he could die in our place for the impure things we have done. We believe that on the cross Jesus died to make us pure in the sight of God the Father. Therefore when Christians die, because they have been given a pure heart by Jesus, then we will get to go and see God and enjoy eternity with Him.
All people will see Jesus one day. Jesus goes on to say that when he "comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He shall sit on the throne of His glory. And all nations shall be gathered before Him. And He shall separate them from one another, as a shepherd divides the sheep from the goats" (Matthew 25:31-32).
Jesus states that those who know his forgiveness are the sheep on his right and those who don’t are the goats on his left. "Then the King [Jesus] shall say to those on His right hand, 'Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world'" (Matthew 25:34). These people who have been forgiven by faith in Jesus will then go and see the Father but the others will not.
There is another place where people who do not know God's forgiveness go. This is the opposite of heaven because it is a place where God's love and care is absent. It is a place where people will not see God. But God loved us so much that he sent his Son to die for us.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
In summary, we cannot see God while we are alive because if we did, we would die as he is perfect and we are not. However, when we die all of us will see Jesus, who is our judge. The question however will be if we see the Father. The only way that we can enter heaven is by accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour.
