Question

Is God listening to my prayers?

Answer

Thank you so much for your spiritual enquiry about prayer.

Yes. God is listening to your prayers.

He is listening in the sense that all things are known to God and nothing is hidden from Him, in the sense that He knows our every thought and our every word; God is listening to your prayers.

As we read in the Psalms:

O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? (Psalm 139:1-7)

From your initial question we can ask two bigger questions: first of all, does God care about what I am saying to Him and secondly does he hear my prayers?

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! (Psalm 4:1)

God does care about what all of his creation share with him. If we pray we are assured that the all mighty God hears them.

Secondly we can know for sure that he will answer our prayers if we are in Christ. This means we have been made right with God through Jesus' death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sin and to make us right with God. If we pray without being made right with God, we have no assurance that he will answer our prayers.

If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. (Psalm 66:18-19)

In summary, I would encourage you to be found in Christ and to walk in Him. By doing so, your prayers will be both listened to and heard. What the answer to those heard prayers will be is quite another story!

It is important to note that prayer is not like a magic spell or genie wishes; God is not a Santa Claus figure or fairy. He is in control. Prayer can change things and we can see examples of this in the Bible. We should pray in accordance with God's word and for his Kingdom to come in power, not our own kingdom or objectives.
