Ask a questionQ & A
Why are there people suffering in Africa if God is there?
Thank you for your very real and caring question about people around the world.
Of course, if we were to take a progressive snapshot of the whole world right now, it is not only Africa where people are suffering, but throughout the whole world, from Syria to Spain, from Ghana to Greece, from the West Bank to the valleys of Wales, people are suffering. If we were to take a time lag snapshot of the whole world, let’s say over the last 6,000 years of world history even, then the amount of suffering we see would, I think, send us all quite mad!
The truth is that we live in a fallen world, full of fallen people. This means everything in God’s universe seems to work against us and in sinful ways, humanity, for selfish gain, both abuse and ruin that part of the universe which we inhabit.
The problem with the world, its wars, injustices and abuses to all kinds of strife, is in fact humanity itself. Me. You.
Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. (James 4:1-2)
The Christian hope for the personal redemption of individuals is that by believing the good news that Christ died for sinners such as they, and that by believing in Him, they might receive eternal life. The Christian hope for the redemption of the planet, the universe and a rule of righteousness lies not in humanity, redeemed or otherwise, but in the return of King Jesus. Until the King comes back to rule the nations with a rod of iron, the birth pangs of the universe, groaning for God to be revealed, join daily with the continuing wind down and dissolution of society to form a cacophony of shouting necessity that Jesus, the creator and sustainer of all things, comes and sorts this sorry mess out for us.
Until that time, the church’s mission is clear: to preach the Gospel to the nations of the world, that many might be saved from the wrath to come. This is the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything. For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. (1 Thessalonians 1:8-10)
