Ask a questionQ & A
Why are all religions founded by men? God believes in equality, but puts men in charge. Why?
Thank you for your interesting question about religions being founded and run by men.
We are not able to comment on other religions because we do not know all the details regarding their founding, their beliefs or their practices. However, we can comment on Christianity because God has given us the Bible to help us and guide us.
In the ancient world, and indeed in many parts of the world today, women are not treated as the image bearers of God that they are. In some cases they are treated as second-class citizens and even as possessions. However, throughout the Bible women are shown to be respected, treasured and honoured as equals in society. However, due to cultural norms, it was the case that men did take a leading role throughout the Bible.
While it is true that men have been heavily involved in Christianity and its spread throughout the world, women have also been very important to the work of Christ.
We can go as far back as Eve, the first woman, and look at what God said to the serpent, a representation of evil, at the fall: "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." (Genesis 3:15). This prophecy is declaring that from the woman will come someone who will destroy what the serpent has done. This is a prophecy about Jesus; that he would crush the head of the serpent, defeating sin once and for all through his death on the cross!
Let's also remember who it was the angel Gabriel went to in order to announce Jesus' coming: it was Mary! And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus" (Luke 1:30-31).
Similarly, the first people to discover Jesus' empty tomb on resurrection day were women. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid...But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. (Luke 23:55, 24:1-3).
There were also many other women involved in the early church, such as Lydia (Acts 16:11-15), Phoebe (Romans 16:1-2) and Prisca (Romans 16:3) and many others. It is Christianity, the faith founded on Jesus Christ, that shows women to be equal, shows women to be respected and honoured with the telling of the Good News.
Regarding your own life, whether you are a man or a woman, God loves you and wants to know you personally. He loves you so much that he sent His Son, Jesus, to die for you on a cross. By accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, you can have your sins forgiven and have direct access to God. God has a wonderful plan for your life and whether you are male or female, I encourage you to accept Jesus as your Saviour today.
In summary, the Bible makes it clear that men and women are of equal value, made in the image of God. Throughout the Bible, women have been used for God's glory, being the bearer of Good News and being involved in Jesus' ministry. God has a wonderful plan for your life and I encourage you to be open to what he wants to do through and with you.
