Questions & answers    GOD    As Father in Heaven

I feel broken and may be depressed. I have shut God out and tell people that I'm fine. What should I do?

Thank you for contacting us at this difficult time in your life. I am sorry to hear that you have been so depressed. Let me assure you that there is hope and there is a way out.

The first step is to acknowledge that you may be depressed. From my own experience of depression, I know that it is possible to know that you are miserable without understanding that you are suffering from depression. A depressed person tends to say things to himself like 'I am a useless person' or 'God loves everybody else, but He only puts up with me because I am not worth loving' or 'I am a failure at everything I do.' In order to begin to recover, you have to acknowledge clearly to yourself, 'I am depressed'. Guilt about needing help is counter-productive. You are human, you are sometimes weak and you sometimes fail; that makes you exactly the same as every other human being who ever lived. God understands this and you need to understand it, too.

For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.
He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy. (Psalm 72:12-13)

It is possible that thoughts have been going around in your head which give you clues about why you are depressed. Perhaps you had a particularly stressful and difficult job and the stress became too much for you. Often, depression is rooted in bad experiences in childhood, when we are too young and inexperienced to be able to deal with what has happened. Another cause can be something that happened which was a terrible shock to us, such as the death of someone we loved. If we are unable to recover, we may be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Beginning to understand the cause of depression can help us deal with it.

The second step is to acknowledge it to your doctor. It can seem embarrassing and humiliating to make such an admission to another person. However, you need to ensure that professional help is available to you, especially if you have ever considered putting an end to your life. Doctors vary in their helpfulness, but I believe that you will feel relieved when you are no longer keeping this burden to yourself. Furthermore, some depression has a purely physical cause and in those cases, medication may make a huge difference.

The third step is to acknowledge your depression to your pastor or another respected church leader, so that you can open yourself to Christian counsel and prayer. If you are not involved with a church, you could try contacting a Christian that you know and asking them to help you find a pastor to talk to. Obviously, we human beings have a body, a mind and an emotional aspect to our nature. We also have a spiritual nature. Depression affects all those parts of us and must be fought on all fronts. Receiving spiritual ministry can make a huge difference. There is an index of churches on this site at

You do not say whether you are a Christian. I wonder whether you have ever received Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord? If you need to know more about this, please watch the video on the main part of our site: If you have never received Him into your life, you can do so now simply by telling Him that you are  sincerely sorry for your sins and failures and inviting Him into your life in faith that He will answer.

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,  who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13)

God created us in His image and has set His love on us. God loves us passionately and has chosen us to reign with Him throughout eternity. Jesus told His disciples,

The Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. (John 16:27)

Paul prayed for the Christians under his care,

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love towards all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power towards us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:15-22)

God's power is great towards you and He will bring you out of the dark place that you are in. In the process, you will learn many things which you could not otherwise have known, and you will one day be able to reach out a hand to others and minister help to them from what you have learnt.

I hope that what I have said will be of some help to you. We will be praying for you.
