Ask a questionQ & A
Do we pray to God or Jesus?
Thank you for asking this great question about prayer.
We see in the Bible that Jesus teaches his followers to pray 'our Father'. This means we pray to God the Father:
"And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:
"Our Father in heaven"" (Matthew 6:7-9)
We are also encouraged to pray through Jesus' name, or by ending the prayers 'in the name of Jesus':
"Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it" (John 14:13)
Therefore we pray to the Father, through Jesus. There are also examples of the early Church praying directly to both Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Prayer is essentially communicating with God. It is wonderful and mysterious. Many long books have been written on the subject. I would encourage you to pray short, simple prayers to begin with, tell God you love him, talk with him about your needs and ask for his love, mercy, forgiveness and kindness in your life.
Study the prayers in the Psalms and in the New Testament to learn how to pray, but most of all: do it! Pray as often as you can.
