Question

Why do I go through bad times even though I worship God every day?

Answer

Thank you for sending us your important question. It is one that many people are asking, because life can be very hard for everyone. I am sorry that you are going through hard times. Please remember that we are praying for you.

I am so glad that you worship God daily. Worship is one of the great keys to overcoming difficult times and God values it highly. You may well know the story in Genesis 22 when God told Abraham to take his only son and offer him as a sacrifice  to God. This, of course, meant killing him. Abraham do not understand why God would tell him such a thing, but he decided to obey. He took two servants with him until they drew near to the place of sacrifice.

Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.” (Genesis 22:5)

Abraham had decided that, whatever happened, he would worship God. Through his willingness to obey and trust God and to continue to worship, God blessed him and he received his son back. If you will continue to trust and worship, God will also bless you. Like Abraham, you have lessons to learn and your sufferings will not be wasted. In fact, they are laying up for you a great reward in Heaven.

The Apostle Paul suffered more than most people, with hunger and thirst, imprisonments and beatings. He wrote to his friends:

So we do not lose heart, though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28)

So please do not lose heart. God is in control and He knows when and how to bless you. He knows, too, how to prepare you to reign with Him in Heaven, which is the reason that He allows you to suffer. He is making your character through the difficulties you face. He has a promise for you.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:10)

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (Galatians 6:9)

When we are in the middle of a hard trial, it is very difficult to take the long view and see that God has not left you but is with you all the time and is pleased by your faithfulness in worship. I hope you are involved in a good church, one which will love you, care for you and encourage you. At such times, we need good teaching and support in prayer. It would also help to read the whole of Romans chapter 8, slowly and prayerfully.
