Ask a questionQ & A
How can a loving God allow paedophilia? This question is holding me back from making commitment.
Thank you for asking a question through the Looking for God website. We are always pleased to hear from visitors.
We believe very strongly that it is God’s desire that no one be harmed, that no one is sinned against, and that all people, especially children, are protected. In fact, sexual activity outside the provision of marriage between a man and a woman is sinful and outside of God's design.
The bible talks very highly of children, saying that children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb reward (Psalm 127:3-5) and Jesus himself said “let the children come to me...for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14).
God cares about children: He even goes as far as to say that the Kingdom of heaven belongs to them, which is certainly a powerful thought.
Yet we also see so many children around the world suffering, including the despicable acts of paedophilia. It is so sad to think that children are not protected and are not kept from harm.
Unfortunately, people’s actions often lead down another path, people sin, hurt people, abuse other people. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus gives two commandments that, if everyone followed, the world would be a better place to live as people would live in harmony with one another. Jesus commanded “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: love your neighbour as yourself”. Jesus goes on to say that all the other laws and rules stem from these two in reflection of the way the Father loves the Son and Holy Spirit. If we were all to follow these rules, then things such as paedophilia would not exist in the world.
However, we know that the world and mankind is living under the curse of sin. God is the judge of both the living and the dead, he will deal with sin in His time and will bring justice speedily. God will bring death on such people who practice evil.
It is also true that God has given us the ability to seek out justice and make sure that any criminal is brought under the full force of the law. If you or anyone you know is under threat from any person, you should contact the police.
I understand that you feel this issue is holding you back from making a commitment, but regardless of this, I would encourage you to think about making a commitment to follow Christ. Through God we believe that things can be understood, and that he is able to equip us to carry out his divine plan and purpose throughout the world. It is clear that you care for children, that you want the best for them, and it may be that through God, he gives you the opportunity to do what you can to help and protect them.
